William H. “Billy” “Pappy” Hoppes, 84, of Macungie, formerly of Longswamp Township died Thursday, January 1, 2015, in Lehigh Valley Hosptial, Salisbury Township, where he was a patient since December 16, 2014. He was the widower of Lottie E. (Fritz) Hoppes who died April 20, 2006 .
Born in Longswamp Township , he was a son of the late Howard L. and Eva M. (Guinther) Hoppes. William was a United States Army veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Hoppes was employed as a molder at Unicast Foundry, Boyertown, retiring in mid 1990's. After retirement he worked as a van driver for Berks County Intermediate Unit, a crossing guard for Brandywine Heights Area School District, and most recently for Upper Macungie Township as a security guard at the township recycling center. Billy was a dedicated volunteer serving with Topton and Lyons Fire Companies. He served as fire police lieutenant in both Topton and Lyons and as captain in Topton. His service spanned over sixty years .
He is survived by Daughter, Linda J. (Hoppes) Reinert, Mertztown. Other survivors include Sisters, Fern (Hoppes) wife of John Moll, Marianna (Hoppes) Strunk, both of Mertztown, LaRue Hoppes, Breinigsville and Jeanette (Hoppes) Boyer, WA; brothers, Jack Hoppes, Allentown and Ronald Hoppes, Philadelphia; Grandchildren, Beth J. (Reinert) wife of Terry A. Reichart, Jr., Kurt A. husband of Shannon L. (Helms) Reinert and Brian, husband of Sarah (Wilks) Hoppes; Great Grandchildren, Kody A. Reichart, Emma K. Reichart, Kaden Hoppes, Briley J. Reinert, and Quentin K. Reinert. He was predeceased by a Son, Leonard Hoppes who died December 31, 2006; a Sister, Mary (Hoppes) Weiser Munn and a Brother, Butch Hoppes .
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at 10:30 AM from Topton Volunteer Fire Company, 600 State Street, Mertztown, with Reverend Jeremiah A. Sassaman, officiating. Interment with Military Honors in Topton Union Cemetery, Topton. Friends may call Tuesday, January 6, 2015 from 7:00 to 8:30 PM and Wednesday from 9:45 to 10:30 AM all in the fire company .
The family requests contributions be made to Topton Volunteer Fire Company, Post Office Box 8, Topton, PA 19562-0008 . Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Topton, PA.
