William A. Merkel, 90, of Macungie died Friday, January 20, 2012 in Kutztown Manor. He was the husband of Frieda (Hoanzl) Merkel. They were married September 25, 1944.
Born in Allentown, he was a son of the late Adam L. and Mary (Krasulak) Merkel. He was a member of the Lutheran congregation of Huff’s Union Church, Alburtis. Mr. Merkel was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II. He was employed a total of 50 years as a television repairman by Harwicks and David’s Electric, both of Emmaus, retiring from Twin-County Cable, Allentown, in 1986. William was a graduate of Emmaus High School, Emmaus. He was a member of Pikeville Sportsmen’s Association, Oley. He assisted in coaching youth baseball and was an avid baseball enthusiast.
He is survived by Wife, Sons, Michael W. husband of Cheryl (Landis) Merkel, Franklin, TN, Jeffrey L. husband of Susan (Miller) Merkel, Alburtis; Brothers, Tom Merkel, Lehighton, Joe Merkel, Sturgis, MI, Paul Merkel, Alburtis. In addition, he is also survived by Grandchildren, Heidi (Merkel) Collins, Zachary Merkel, and Molly Merkel, and a Great Granddaughter, Calli Rose Collins. He was predeceased by a Sister, Mildred (Merkel) Hemphill.
Funeral Services are Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 2:00 PM in the Ludwick Funeral Home, 25 East Weis Street, Topton. Interment in Huff’s Church Union Cemetery, Alburtis, with Military Honors provided by Ray A. Master, Post 217, American Legion, Topton. There is no viewing.
