Wayne I Miller

July 2, 1921 — August 19, 2010

Wayne I. Miller, 89, of Longswamp Township, died Thursday, August 19, 2010, in Liberty Nursing Center, Allentown where he was a patient since June 25, 2010. He was the husband of Doris J. (Schwoyer) Miller. They were married 63 years last November.

Born in Richmond Township, he was a son of the late Irvin Miller and Eva (Moyer) Kunkel. He was a decorated World War II Veteran serving in the Army Air Corps from 1941 to 1946. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Unit badge with two oak leaf clusters, Purple Heart for injuries received during battle April 15, 1942 in the Western Pacific Theatre of Operation; He also received the Philippines Defense Ribbon with a single bronze star. A prisoner of war, Mr. Miller was imprisoned in Mukden, Manchuria, now Shenyen, China for 3 ½ years in a Japanese P.O.W. camp. He recently was awarded the Silver Star, for gallantry in action against an enemy of the United States while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force. Miller attained the rank of Sergeant First Class.

He is survived by Wife, Daughter, Dawne K. (Miller) wife of Terry L. Clay, Mohrsville. There are also 2 Grandsons, Thor E. Schaffer and Jeb D. Shaffer; and 7 Great Grandchildren. Mr. Miller was predeceased by 2 Brothers and 3 Sisters.

Funeral Services are Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at 10:30 AM from Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown. Interment with military honors provided by Ray A. Master Post 217 American Legion Honor Guard, Topton, in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Township. Friends may call Wednesday from 9:30 to 10:30 AM in the funeral home.

The family requests contributions be made to American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor (ADBC), 945 Main Street, Wellsburg, WV 26070. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Kutztown, PA.
