Shirley Smith Hartman, of The Lutheran Home at Topton, and formerly of Kutztown, PA passed away peacefully on Friday, April 17, 2025 in her residence. She was the wife of R. Joe Hartman, whom she married on a lovely summer day, June 19, 1953.

Born on September 6, 1930, Shirley was a daughter of the late Russell and Grace Smith of Tionesta, PA. She was reared in Tionesta and educated at Penn State University, where she received her bachelor's degree in Home Economics Education.

Mrs. Hartman was a member of the Alpha Ki Delta sorority, Phi Mu Honorary and various Penn State clubs. She worked for the PA State University Extension service in Greene, Fayette, and Northumberland counties. Mrs. Hartman was a school teacher at Schaefferstown, Trevorton, and Annville-Cleona. She served as the activities director for the Reading Lutheran Caum Home Adult Day Care and organized and served as activities director for the Reading First UCC Senior Center for 13 years. Shirley was a member and elder of St. Paul's United Church of Christ of Kutztown and an active member of St. Paul's UCC Women's Guild. She was a past 4-H leader, past member of the board of Friend, Inc., Meals on Wheels volunteer, Lutheran Home volunteer and served as a past president of the Woman's Club of Kutztown.

Shirley loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and most recently a great-grandmother. Her enjoyments were reading, bridge, painting, traveling and cooking.

In addition to her husband of nearly 72 years, Joe, Shirley is survived by her two sons, Gary J. Hartman, and wife Karen, of Tucson, AZ, and R. Gregg Hartman, Kutztown; grandson, Christopher Hartman, and wife Chelsea, of Lancaster; and two great-granddaughters, Brynlee and Cora. Along with her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her sister, Sylvia (Smith) Korona and brother, John Smith.

Funeral services for Shirley will be held privately with her pastor, The Rev. Debra Timmins, officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in McEwensville Presbyterian Cemetery, Northumberland County.
