Dr. Sally C. Park, Ph.D., 95, of Topton, died peacefully, Thursday, June 6, 2024, in the Henry Healthcare Center on the Campus of The Lutheran Home at Topton. She was the widow of Dr. Philip M. Park Sr., Ph.D., who died in 1992. Born in Baltimore, MD, Sally was a daughter of the late Dr. Barrett C. Catlin, MD, and Bessie (Carmany) Catlin.
She was a former member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Middle Village, NY; and Grace Lutheran Church, on the Campus of The Lutheran Home at Topton.
Sally earned her Ph.D. in Musicology from Bryn Mawr College, Montgomery County. Sally was a Church Organist/Choir Director for more than 60 years and taught private piano lessons for as many as 35 students. Sally worked as an Administrative Assistant at Columbia University, New York, NY; and was a professor of Musicology at Alvernia University, Reading. She also taught Middle School, worked for Lutheran World Relief, and taught music in a program specifically designed for toddler aged children.
She was a member of American Guild of Organists and American Musicological Society. Her Ph.D. Thesis was focused upon the musical instruments of the 16th Century and she has played some of the World's Oldest Church Organs in Europe and England. During the post WWII years of 1949-1959, Sally's husband Philip Sr. worked as an Office of Strategic Services Agent for the Department of Defense and was part of "Operation Paperclip", recruiting the top German Scientists of the day to work for the US Government. During that time period Sally and Philip Sr. lived in Salzburg Austria and Bonn Germany where Sally would also meet up with some of the prominent scientists that Philip Sr. recruited.
Sally is survived by two sons: Philip M. Park Jr., Alburtis and William B. Park, Chicago, IL. There is one grandson, Justin J. Park.
The family will host a Memorial Service on Saturday June 22, 2024, at 2:00 pm, at Grace Lutheran Church in the Henry Auditorium on the campus of The Lutheran Home at Topton, 1 S. Home Avenue, Topton, PA 19562, with The Reverend Carl F. Schmoyer, officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation with the family immediately prior to the service from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Inurnment will be private at the convenience of the family.
