Richard K Kunkel

Richard K. Kunkel, Sr., 83, former Mayor of Lenhartsville Borough, serving continuously from 1973 until failing health forced his resignation in 2015. Richard was a resident of Weston Senior Living at Pinebrook, Orwigsburg, formerly of Lenhartsville, he died on Monday, September 12, 2016, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the widower of Sandra M. (Helbert) Kunkel who died on February 3, 2002.

Born in Hamburg, he was a son of the late Kenneth W. and Lovie S. (Hunsicker) Kunkel. Richard was a former member of Frieden's U.C.C. Church, Lenhartsville.  Mr. Kunkel honorably and faithfully served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Richard was first employed as a shipping clerk at the former Kutztown Shoe Factory, Kutztown, from 1949 to 1981; he then worked for Blue Mountain Mushroom, from 1981 to 2000; Walmart from 2001 to 2010; and finally Tom Schaeffer's R.V., Shoemakersville, from 2010 to 2014. He was a life of Behler-Hein Post 637 American Legion, Hamburg.

He is survived by a Son, Richard K., Jr., husband of Kathleen M. (Schnell) Kunkel, Lenhartsville; Step Daughter, Lori A. (Burkert), widow of Mark A. Cutlip, Kutztown. Other survivors include 2 Grandsons, Kenneth R., husband of Christine L. (Bradbury) Kunkel and Andrew M., husband of Ashley N. (Tobias) Kunkel; Step Grandsons, Derek S. Burkert and Colton J. Cutlip; and a Great Grandson, Cameron M. Kunkel.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2016, at 10:30 AM from Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, with Reverend Sterling A. Schnell, officiating.  Interment with Military Honors provided by Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion Honor Guard, Topton, will follow in New Bethel Cemetery, Kempton.  Relatives and friends may call on Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 AM in the funeral home.

The family requests contributions be made in memory of Richard K. Kunkel, Sr. to Behler-Hein Post 637 American Legion, 650 Franklin Street, Hamburg, PA 19526. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Kutztown, PA.
