Ray M Stauffer

Ray M. “Nupper” Stauffer, 91, of Topton died Thursday, September 6, 2012 in the Lutheran Home at Topton.

Born in Topton, he was a son of the late Clarence and Ellen Jane (Barto) Stauffer. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Topton. Ray was a graduate of Kutztown High School, class of 1939. Mr. Stauffer was a Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy serving during World War II. He served aboard Destroyers USS Gridley and USS Fox. He was employed as Superintendent of the Sewage Treatment Plant for Topton Borough from 1968 until his retirement in 1986. Prior to that, he was a core maker at the former Emmaus Foundry and Machine Co. 1947 to 1968 and Caloric Corporation, Topton, 1939 to 1946. Mr. Stauffer was a former president of Topton Borough Council for 16 years and former president of Topton Municipal Authority. He was a director of the Berks County Association of Boroughs.

Mr. Stauffer was a life member of the Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion, Topton and regularly served on its Honor Guard. Ray was a member and served as president of Topton Lions Club, 1972-1973. He participated in the American Legion Minstrels in the 1940’s and was an original chorus member of the Brandywine Minstrels. He became an End Man known to all as “Nupper” in 1986 and continued as such until 2005.

He is survived by Daughters, JoAnne F. (Stauffer), wife of Kieth Boyer, Lyon Station, Susan I. (Stauffer) wife of Mike D. Chaffier, Bangor, Beverly J. (Stauffer) Reinik, Allentown, Kathy R. (Stauffer), widow of Kevin Bristow, Wilmington, DE; Sister, Fay B. (Stauffer), widow of Harvey Eck, Allentown. There are also 8 Grandchildren, and 9 Great Grandchildren. He was predeceased by a Daughter, Nancy R. (Stauffer) Rumble; Sisters, Helen L. (Stauffer) Neusch and Ruth (Stauffer) Strohl, and Brothers, Dr. Russell Stauffer and Jack H. Stauffer.

Memorial Services are Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 10:30 AM Trinity Lutheran Church, 121 S. Home Ave., Topton. Inurnment, with Military honors provided by Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion, Topton, in the Topton American Legion Garden of Honor. Friends may call, Saturday, from 9:30 to 10:30 AM in the church.
