The Honorable Randy L. Schlegel, Mayor of Lyons, age 72, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 in Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest, Allentown. He was the loving husband of Sallyann (Schwoyer) Schlegel, whom he married on September 28, 1980.
Born in Reading, Randy was a son of the late Roy L. and Betty J. (Moyer) Schlegel. Randy was a 1970 graduate of Kutztown Area High School, Kutztown, and later attended Career Academy, Washington, DC, where he received his certificate as a Radio Disc Jockey. Randy was an electrician for over 50 years and the owner and operator of Schlegel's Electrical Work.
Randy was an accomplished musician and guitar player all his life. He played in many groups throughout the years including Sonny Miller and the Happy Valley Boys, The Royal Cavaliers, The Jupiters, TREY, The Good News Traveling Band, and had even backed up for well-known country music stars such as Loretta Lynn at local parks. Following his time playing with his bands, Randy began to Disc Jockey and Emcee local events, dances and parties, operating under NOVA Productions and naming himself the Mayor of Music.
Randy was dedicated to his Lyons community. He served as the Mayor of Lyons for over 30 years, was influential in establishing the local police commission - Northeastern Berks Regional Police Department, helped commission the borough water and sewage treatment plant, supported those affected by the Lyons tornado, and was very involved with the various activities within the Lyons community. Randy also brought holiday cheer to many families throughout the area as one of Santa’s helpers. Randy was also a volunteer with Berks Festival of Faith. A man of deep Christian faith, what Randy loved doing most was teaching Sunday School, Catechetics and preaching. Up until his passing, Randy served as a Lay Minster at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Lobachsville. He was a pillar of love, strength, and guidance for his family, and his spirit will undoubtedly live on through their lives and the countless lessons he imparted.
Along with his wife of 44 years, Randy is survived by his six children, Adam A., husband of Tiffani A. (Stine) Schlegel, Kutztown; Dathan J., husband of Kelly-Ann S. (Bieber) Schlegel, Fleetwood, Jonah J., husband of Emily A. (Behm) Schlegel, Kutztown; Naaman D., husband of Becky A. (Webb) Schlegel, Blandon; Caleb E., husband of Christina M. (Cucco) Schlegel, Glen Gardner, NJ, and Hannah R. (Schlegel), wife of Peter J. Sitarik, Fleetwood; 12 grandchildren, Grace, Willow, Christian, Logan, Madison, Eden, Nicodemus, Emma, Olivia, Darcy, Brielle and Clara; and two sisters, Connie J. (Schlegel), wife of David A. Vanim, Zionsville; and Cindy L. (Schlegel), wife of Richard D. Munson, Kutztown.
A memorial service to celebrate and honor Randy's life will be held on Sunday, February 16, 2025 at 4:00 p.m. at Zion Moselem Lutheran Church, 340 Moselem Church Road, Kutztown. A visitation with his family will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the church.
