Merlin A. Oswald, 89, of Lyon Station, died Tuesday, August 11, 2015, in The Lutheran Home at Topton, where he was a patient since June 15, 2015. He was the widower of Barbara M. (Gring) Oswald who died May 21, 2015.
Born in Rockland Township, he was a son of the late Arthur S. and Bertha (Fenstermacher) Oswald. Mr. Oswald was a member of Saint Paul's United Church of Christ, Kutztown. Merlin was a United States Army veteran serving in World War II, where he received a bronze star medal. Mr. Oswald first worked as an assembler at Boyertown Body Works, Boyertown, for 20 years; he then worked for East Penn Manufacturing Company, Inc., Lyon Station, for 20 years, first as a truck driver, then as Yard Foreman, until his retirement in 1989. After his retirement, he and his wife owned and operated the Lyons Den Craft Shop, Lyon Station, specializing in Toll painting, for many years.
He is survived by Daughters, Cynthia L. (Oswald), wife of David W. Swan, Mertztown and Melinda S. (Oswald) Miller, Lyon Station; Son, Richard Oswald, companion of Diane Bender, Boyertown; Son-in-law, Clarence Lenhart, Kutztown, widower of predeceased Daughter, Karen L. (Oswald) Lenhart; 5 Grandchildren, Randall H., husband of Jennifer (Miller) Fenstermacher, Jr., Christopher C. Miller, companion of Melissa M. Miller, Jennifer L. (Swan), wife of Philip M. Good, Chelsea S. Lenhart and Kate L. Swan. There are also 4 Great Grandchildren. Other survivors include Sisters, Rachel (Oswald), wife of Ralph Fegely, Mertztown and Mary L. (Oswald), widow of Jack Heffelfinger, Fleetwood. He was predeceased by a Sister, Shirley L. (Oswald) Moser.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2015, at 10:30 AM from Saint Paul's United Church of Christ, 47 South Whiteoak Street, Kutztown, with Reverend John W. Davies, officiating. Interment, with Military Honors provided by Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion Honor Guard, Topton, will follow in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Fleetwood. Relatives and friends may call Wednesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 AM in the church.
The family requests contributions be made in Merlins's memory to Lyons Fire Company Truck Crew, P.O. Box 5, Lyon Station, PA 19536-0005 or St. Paul's U.C.C. Church, 47 S. Whiteoak Street, Kutztown, PA 19530. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Kutztown, PA.
