Margaret J. "Peggy" Smith, R.N., 86, formerly of Kutztown, passed away on Wednesday, January 28, 2026 in Chestnut Knoll Senior Living, Boyertown, where she was a resident since 2023. She was also a resident of Grand View Manor in Fleetwood for several years. Peggy was the widow of Robert C. Smith, Sr., who died in 1965.
Born in the village of Molltown, Berks County, Peggy was a daughter of the late George W. Fegely, Sr., and Margaret I. (Folk) Fegely and was a graduate of Fleetwood Area High School. Following her high school graduation, Peggy attended Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing, Philadelphia, where she graduated as a Registered Nurse.
Margaret was employed as a Registered Nurse by Community General Hospital, Reading, and The Lutheran Home at Topton, where she worked for over 20 years until her retirement in 2009. Following her retirement, Peggy was employed part-time as a Nurse by The Kutztown Area School District. She also worked as a Preschool Teacher at St. Paul's UCC Preschool in Fleetwood. Margaret dedicated her life to the service of others. Her commitment to healthcare was driven by her profound desire to help those in need, a calling she fulfilled with unparalleled grace and warmth. Throughout her career, she touched countless lives, embodying the very essence of empathy and care.
Peggy was a faithful and dedicated member of Becker's St. Peters Lutheran Church of Molltown, where she was a member of their church council, choir and worship and music committee. She would also volunteer at their annual strawberry festivals and other events. She enjoyed knitting, reading and singing and going to the cabin in Lycoming County.
Peggy is survived by her daughter, Patricia A. "Patty" (Smith), wife of Matthew C. Christman, Kutztown; three grandchildren, Daniel, husband of Jessica (Guido) Fegely, Abbey Fegely, companion of Cory Cornell, and Lucas Fegely, fiancé of Paula Salloum; three great-grandchildren, Porter Carl, Hudson Cornell, and Nicholas Fegely; and brothers, Kenneth M. Fegely, and Glenn D. Fegely.
Along with her husband and parents, Peggy was predeceased by her son, Robert C. Smith, Jr., in 2010; and siblings, Willard Strunk, George W. Fegely, Jr., Myrtle (Fegely) Arndt, June (Fegely) Wuchter, Jane (Fegely) Smith, Mary Lou (Fegely) Faust, Leonard L. Fegely and Bruce R. Fegely.
A memorial service to celebrate and honor Peggy's life will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. in Becker's St. Peters Lutheran Church, 265 Maidencreek Road, Fleetwood, PA, with a visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be private in Zion Moselem Church Cemetery, Richmond Township.
