Lewis F. Witwer, 83, of Mertztown, died Thursday, April 24, 2014 in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the widower of Shirley J. (Stoudt) Witwer who died April 17, 2005 .
Born in Longswamp Township , he was a son of the late Ivan L. and Mae H. (Behringer) Witwer. Mr. Witwer was a member of Longswamp United Church of Christ, Mertztown. Lewis was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during the Korean War. Lewis worked as a bartender many years at the former Shamrock Hotel, Mertztown, a business owned by his parents; and was a painter for Pauley Lantz, Topton. He also was a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service; worked at Air Products & Chemicals, Trexlertown, and Caloric Corporation at its former Topton plant . He was employed as a laborer at the former Garden State Tanning, Fleetwood for over 15 years until his retirement in 1992. After retirement, Lewis owned and operated Witwer's Clams, Mertztown, selling and distributing Jersey clams for over ten years
He is survived by Sons, Terry L. Witwer, Kutztown and William L., husband of Sandra (Bacon) Witwer, Mellville, Montana. Other survivors include a Sister, Doris J. (Witwer), wife of Chris L. Haas, Mertztown; Sister-in-law, Doris J. (Stoudt), widow of Raymond A. Weiser, Jr., Kutztown. There are also 4 Grandchildren, Lemmy K. Witwer, Hodel J. Witwer, Jamos K. Witwer and Santene Peoples; and a Great Grandson, Jazper J. Witwer. Lewis was predeceased by a Sister, Joyce (Witwer) Rhode .
Funeral Services are Monday, April 28, 2014 at 1:30 PM from Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 25 East Weis Street, Topton . Interment, with Military Honors, will follow in Longswamp Union Cemetery, Mertztown. Friends may call Monday afternoon from 12:30 to 1:30 PM in the funeral home .
