Lauren B. Angstadt, D.M.D., F.A.G.D., 51, an Allentown dentist and wife of Attorney Peter J. Karoly were killed February 2, 2007, in a private plane crash just outside New Bedford, Mass. Lauren and Peter were married for 22 years.
Born in Reading, PA, she was a daughter of Erma S. (Lenker) Angstadt of Kutztown and the late Charles Z. Angstadt. She was a 1973 graduate of Kutztown Area High School where she was a trombone player member of the field hockey team and drum major of the marching band. She was inducted into the National Honor Society. She was a pre-med major at Muhlenberg College, Allentown, graduating in 1977. She then attended Temple University School of Dentistry, Philadelphia, where she was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon the national dental scholastic fraternity. This honor is awarded to the upper 12 percent of the graduating class. In addition she received the Herbert G. Lampson, M.D. award for the highest ranking female student and the American Academy of Oral Medicine award for outstanding achievement, proficiency and promise in the field of oral medicine. She was also recognized by the Stomatognathic Society for her achievements in the area of fixed partial prosthodontics.
After graduating from Temple, she received a fellowship in the Academy of General Dentistry. She completed her residency in 1981 at the former Allentown Hospital, Allentown. She began her practice with Mark Minetola, DMD, Allentown in 1982 until 1987 when she began a solo practice on Hamilton Street, Allentown, specializing in general and cosmetic dentistry, that she continued to operate until her death. She and her husband, who was also killed in the crash, were instrumental in bringing baseball back to the Allentown area by founding the Allentown Ambassadors, an independent league team that operated from 1997 until 2004.
Peter and Lauren owned and operated the Haviland Grille, Allentown during the 1980’s. They also operated several non-claustrophobic MRI centers, first in the Allentown area, then Wilkes Barre, Camp Hill, and South Carolina. Lauren and Peter were members of Saint Paul’s UCC Church, Kutztown. While attending high school and Muhlenberg College, Lauren was active playing field hockey, swimming on the Kutztown Dolphin Swim Team, which she later coached. Lauren was on the all-star field hockey team and also a member of the Board of Associates as the student representative while attending Muhlenberg College. She was a member of the Lehigh County Dental Society, and Pennsylvania and American Dental Associations. She also participated in two dental mission trips, first to Peru, then to Venezuela providing dental care to the underprivileged.
She is survived by Mother, Sister, Dr. Kristen Angstadt, wife of Dr. David Hoffman.
Memorial Services are Sunday, February 11, 2007 at 2:30 PM from St. Paul’s UCC Church, 47-51 South Whiteoak St., Kutztown. Private inurnment in Union Cemetery of Bowers. Friends may call Sunday from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM in the church.
