Mrs. Larue M. Mertz

LaRue M. (Meckes) Mertz, 95, a resident of Phoebe Berks and formerly of Kutztown, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 25, 2021. She was the widow of Woodrow W. Mertz, who died in 1978.

Born in Fleetwood, LaRue was a daughter of the late Harold and Erma (Hilberg) Meckes. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Kutztown and was also a graduate of Kutztown Area High School. LaRue was a homemaker who enjoyed quilting and needlepoint. She was a member of the Kutztown Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and enjoyed walking, especially around Kutztown. For many years, LaRue could be seen taking her daily five-mile walks around Kutztown, a testament to her drive and an inspiration to many.

LaRue is survived by her three children, Christine M. (Mertz) Jensen, widow of Robert Jensen, Sea Cliff, NY, William H. Mertz, husband of Michael T. McCall, Cloverdale, CA, and John F. Mertz, husband of Cheryl A. (Ferrara) Mertz, Mohnton; two grandsons, John F. Mertz, Jr., husband of Natalie (Bradley) Mertz, Glen Mills, and Benjamin Mertz, husband of Amber Mantz, Kutztown; and five great-grandchildren, Frank, Rocco, Joseph, Joshua and Maxwell Mertz.

In addition to her husband and parents, LaRue was predeceased by her siblings, Althea (Meckes) Wink, Paul Meckes and Malcom Meckes.

A graveside service and burial will be held privately in Hope Cemetery, Kutztown.
