Dr. John G. “Jack” Grossman, 83, of Kutztown, formerly of Topton, died Sunday, March 23, 2008 at 1:55 a.m. in his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Margaret L. “Peggy” (Hench) Grossman, they were married May 29, 1948.
Born in Selinsgrove, Snyder County, PA, he was a son of the late Luther D. and Mildred E. (Goulding) Grossman. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kutztown. Formerly, he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Topton, where he was a past president of church council and a member of the choir. He was a US Navy veteran of WWII. He was a member of Millersburg, PA, Lodge #364, F.&A.M. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art Education from Kutztown University in 1949. He also received a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from Northwestern University, Chicago, in 1947, a Master of Arts degree in Art Education from Columbia University, New York, in 1951. He completed his doctorate in education in 1969 at Penn State University, University Park, PA.
Dr. Grossman was a professor of Art at Kutztown University for 29 years until his retirement in 1987. He served as chairman of the College of Art for three years. Jack was an accomplished artist, working in watercolor and oil paintings. His paintings included many Berks County landscapes and farmsteads. His works also included scenes from his travels in the United States and abroad since 1946. For the last 20 years he was an avid collector of antique tools.
He is survived by Wife, Daughter, Beverly J. (Grossman) wife of Glenn J. Godshall, Kutztown; Sons, Reverend Randall A. husband of Nancy E. J. (Jensen) Grossman, Reading, and Michael J. husband of Ellen M. (Hahn) Grossman, Topton. There is also a Sister, Dorothy H. (Grossman) widow of Morton Jones, Langhorne, Bucks County, PA. Additionally, there are 9 Grandchildren, Marci B. Grossman, Miriam E. (Grossman) wife of Gregory B. Fairbanks, Elizabeth A. (Godshall) wife of Joseph S. A., Pieller, Laura L. (Godshall) wife of Derek M. McElwain, Sarah K. Grossman, Dana K. Godshall fiancé of Joshua A. Angstadt, Olivia K. Grossman, Meredith E. Grossman and Leslie E. Grossman. There is also a Great Granddaughter, Savannah B. Pieller. Dr. Grossman was predeceased by a Son, Robert L. Grossman in 1995.
Memorial Services are Thursday, March 27, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. from Trinity Lutheran Church, 357 West Main Street, Kutztown. Interment with Military Honors provided by Ray A. Master, Post #217, American Legion, Topton, in Fairview Cemetery, Kutztown, is private at the convenience of the family. Friends may call Wednesday, 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM in Ludwick Funeral Home, 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, and Thursday, 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM in the church.
