John D Schaeffer

John D. Schaeffer, 100, of Maxatawny Township, died Sunday, September 15, 2013 in Hearthstone at Maidencreek, assisted living facility where he recently resided. He was the husband of Maude E. “Lulie” Schaeffer, who died March 8, 2011, also at the age of 100.

Born July 18, 1913 in Maxatawny Township, he was a son of the late Charles R. and Annie A. (Knittle) Schaeffer. He was a member of Saint Paul’s United Church of Christ, Kutztown, where he was a deacon, elder and former member of Consistory. He, along with his wife Maude, owned and operated a dairy and livestock farm in Maxatawny Township for over 30 years until their retirement in 1983. John also was a bus driver for 20 years for Carl R. Bieber Tourways, Inc., Kutztown. Mr. Schaeffer was an active member for many years of Kutztown Grange #1836, where he served as Grange Master on two separate occasions, was Overseer for many years, served on the executive committee and was co-chairman of the building committee. Mr. Schaeffer was also active in Berks County Grange, Pennsylvania State Grange and National Grange Associations. He was a member of Kutztown Fair Association formerly serving on its Board of Directors, he currently was Director Emeritus. John was a long-time member of the Board of Directors of Fairview Cemetery, Kutztown. He also formerly served as a Berks County 4-H leader and was a member of Kutztown Fire Company.

He is survived by Daughter, Shirley A. (Schaeffer) Stricker; Son, John C. husband of Cynthia P. (Frederick) Schaeffer, both of Maxatawny Township. Other survivors include Grandchildren, Greg D. Stricker, Tim D. husband of Tammy (Pensinger) Schaeffer, David J. Schaeffer, Jennifer M. (Moll) wife of Tish D. Lau, Lindsey P. (Moll) wife of Todd Derstine. Great Grandchildren, Marci (Schaeffer) wife of Joseph Jenkins, Brittany (Schaeffer) wife of Daniel Tempel, Stacey Tobin, Daniel Tobin, Kendra Schaeffer, Breanne Schaeffer, David Schaeffer, Riley Derstine, Peyton Derstine, Lucas Lau and Cassius Lau; and Great-Great Grandchildren, Ava Jenkins, Cadence Tempel and Grace Tempel. Mr. Schaeffer was predeceased by a Granddaughter, Bonnie (Schaeffer) Tobin, a Sister, Anna Schaeffer and a Brother, George Schaeffer.

Funeral Services are Saturday, September 21, 2013, 10:30 AM from Saint Paul’s United Church of Christ, 47 South Whiteoak Street, Kutztown, PA 19530. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Maxatawny Township. Friends may call Saturday, from 9:00 to 10:30 AM in the church.

The family requests contributions be made to the memorial fund of the church at the above address. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Kutztown, PA.
