AVID MARKSMAN, BELOVED HUSBAND, LONGSHOREMAN
John A. Porto, Jr., 75, of Longswamp Township, formerly of Bayonne, NJ, died peacefully, Saturday, December 28, 2024, in Lehigh Hospital In-Patient Hospice Unit, Salisbury Township. He was the loving husband of Nancy (Hart) Porto, whom he married July 16, 1977. Born in Bayonne, NJ, John was the son of the late John A., Sr., & Julia C. (Horoho) Porto.
John was a graduate of Bayonne High School, Class of 1968. John was employed as a heavy equipment maintenance mechanic for Global Container Terminal, Jersey City, NJ, for over 35 years, until his retirement. He was a member of the International Longshoremen's Association. John with his wife, Nancy, was a franchisee of the 7-Eleven, Mountainside, NJ.
John was a competative shooter, a range officer and instructor for the Bayonne Police Department, and a member of Topton Gun Club and US Pistol Association. In addition, John was an avid racecar driver where he received several trophies for his victories at Raceway Park, Englishtown, NJ. His favorite car to race was his 1969 Ford Mustang.
In addition to his wife of 47 years, Nancy, John is survived by several close cousins: Kristopher Horoho; Kenneth Horoho; Kevin Horoho; Kenwyn (Horoho) Schaffner; Kathy (Horoho) Bower; Karen (Horoho) Moriarty.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. at Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church, 14833 Kutztown Road, Kutztown, PA 19530, with The Reverend John C. Maria, as celebrant. Interment in Berks County Memorial Gardens. Relatives and friends are invited to a viewing from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Ludwick Funeral Homes and Cremation Care, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, PA 19530 and to the Funeral Mass at 1:30pm at Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church.
The family sugguests contributions be considered in John's memory to Lehigh Valley Hospice, 2024 Lehigh Street, Suite 100, Allentown, PA 18103.
