Homer B. Fegley, M.D., 100, of Topton, formerly of Lehighton, PA and Brookfield, CT, died Wednesday, December 14, 2011 in the Lutheran Home at Topton. He was the husband of Arlene E. (Guth) Fegley. They were married January 26, 1938.
Born in Scranton, he was son of the late Nathan K. Fegley, DVM, and the late Laura (Burkert) Fegley. He was a 1928 graduate of Emmaus High School and a 1934 graduate of Hahnemann Medical School. He served his internship at the former Allentown Hospital. In 1936 he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Medicine where he studied General Surgery. He completed residencies in Surgery and Obstetrics at other hospitals. He was in private practice in Catasauqua from 1938 to 1949. He served as a Captain in the US Army with the 110th anti-aircraft battalion during WWII in the European Theatre from the invasion of Omaha Beach until his discharge in 1946. He received the Legion of Merit Medal for exceptional duty, and five battle stars.
Dr. Fegley was one of the founding doctors of Gnaden Huetten Hospital, Lehighton, where he served as Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Associate Chief of Surgery. He delivered the first set of triplets born at Gnaden Huetten Hospital. He was in private practice in Lehighton from 1951 until 1968. He was a 32nd degree Mason and life member of Lehighton Lodge #621 F.&A.M.; president of the Lehighton Lions Club; a School Director for the Lehighton School District from 1959 to 1965, serving as chairman of the building committee for the construction of Lehighton Area High School; and the Carbon County Representative to the Board of Directors of Lehigh-Carbon Community College.
In 1968, he received an invitation to assist in opening the Emergency Department at the Danbury Hospital, Danbury, CT. He was a charter member of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Fegley retired from Danbury Hospital on July 1, 1976.
He is survived by Wife, Sons, William J. Fegley, Fulton, MO, Dr. John A. Fegley, Ed.D., Danbury, CT, Daniel N. Fegley, Brookfield, CT; Grandson, Peter J. Fegley, Naugatuck, CT; Granddaughter, Beth Ann Fegley, Danbury, CT and 4 Great Grandchildren.
Funeral Services are Saturday, December 17, 2011 at 11:30 AM from the Ludwick Funeral Home, 25 East Weis Street, Topton. Entombment in Schuylkill Haven Union Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call Saturday, from 10:30 to 11:30 AM in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Topton, PA.
