Henry E. "Emmy" Bard, Kutztown Centenarian, 100, of Kutztown, died peacefully, Sunday, January 26, 2025, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township, where he was under hospice care following a fall in his home. He was the widower of Elizabeth M. (Schaeffer) Bard, who died February 5, 2014. Born in Elkins, West Virginia, Henry was a son of the late Ralph M., Sr., and Ruth (Emsing) Bard. He was a member of Saint Paul's United Church of Christ, Kutztown. Henry honorably and faithfully served our country as a veteran of the United State Marine Corps, during World War II.
"Emmy" as he was known by family and friends, attended Kutztown State Teacher's College, now Kutztown University. He began his professional career, first working at Carpenter Steel, Reading; then for over 40 years as a telecontrol operator for Caloric Corporation, at its former Topton plant. Following his retirement from Caloric, Henry began working as a maintenance man for the Saucony Cross Retirement Community, Kutztown. And, then he was one of the dedicated caretakers of Hope Cemetery, Kutztown, working into his 90's.
Throughout his life Henry enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also was a collector of antique bottles. He also enjoyed sports. In his younger years, Henry played fast-pitch softball for the Kutztown Fire Company "Fireman's League" and was a member of the 1948 Berks County Rec League Baseball Championship Team 'Eagles.' One of Henry's favorite sayings or replies was "Whatever!"
Emmy is survived by two sons: Michael H. Bard, Kutztown; and Terrence L., husband of Susan J. (Ruch) Bard, Mertztown. Other survivors include a sister, Carol M. (Bard) widow of Robert J. Heinly, Kutztown. There are three grandchildren: Christopher M. Bard and his wife Ashley Bard; Tyler J. Bard and his wife Samantha Bard; and Erika E. (Bard), wife of Joseph Keller; and five great grandchildren: Twins Logan Michael Bard and Avery Elizabeth Bard; Owen Bard, Nathan Bard; and Logan Keller. In addition to his wife, Elizabeth, and parents, Henry was predeceased by siblings: Wendall Bard; Joan (Bard) Bast; Ruth (Bard) Gehris; and Ralph M. "Joey" Bard, Jr.
A private service to honor and celebrate Henry's life will be held at the convenience of the family. Inurnment with Military Honors in Hope Cemetery, Kutztown. There are no public viewing or calling hours.
