Harold James Edward Lantz

Dr. Harold James Edward Lantz, D.D.S., 90, 114 Arlington Riddle Village, Media, (Middletown Twp., Delaware County, PA), formerly of Topton, and Newtown Square, PA, died Thursday, February 26, 2004, in Monticello House at Riddle Village, Media, (Middletown Twp., Delaware County). He was married to Dorothy E. (Wert) Lantz, they were married 60 years last August 9th.

Born in Fullerton (Whitehall Twp., Lehigh County), PA, he was a son of the late George L. and the late Mary E. (Rhoads) Lantz. Dr. Lantz operated a General Dentistry Practice in Philadelphia, from September 1, 1950 to September 1, 1957. During the same time was also employed as an Instructor, Prosthetic Department, Temple University School of Dentistry, Phila from 1950-1955. From 1954 to1955 he also served as Clinic Coordinator, Temple University School of Dentistry. He was promoted to Assistant Professor, Prosthetic Department in 1955 and worked in that capacity until 1959. He then became an Associate Professor, Prosthetic Department, Temple University School of Dentistry, Phila, from 1959-1962, when he was named Professor and Chairman, Department of Prosthodontics, Temple University School of Dentistry, Philadelphia, until his retirement in 1978. He was Advisor to Eaton Laboratories, Norwich, New York, from 1965 to 1978. He also was a Prosthetic Consultant to U.S. Navy, Philadelphia County Dental Society, from 1968-1978. Dr. Lantz also served as a Dental Consultant, Eastern Pennsylvania Psychiatric Institute, 1971 to 1978. He was a Dental Consultant and Associate Attending Staff Prosthodontist, Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, Philadelphia, 1972-1978. He was also an Associate Staff Member as Affiliate in Dental Medicine, Department of Dental Prosthesis, Albert Einstein Medical Center, Northern Division, Philadelphia, PA, from 1972 to 1978. (12) He was also a Dental Consultant, Suburban General Hospital, Norristown, PA, 1977-1978.

Dr. Lantz was a US Army Veteran having attained the rank of Colonel, and served during WWII. He also served as the Liaison Representative at Temple University, Philadelphia, for the US Army. He graduated from Officer’s Candidate School, Camp Barkely, Texas, in 1943, with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, M.A.C. Dr. Lantz served a total of 32 years, 5 months, retiring as Colonel, having served in the Dental Corps. He retired September 9, 1973.

Dr. Lantz was a member of the following organizations; he was a F.&A.M. of Huguenot Lodge #377, Kutztown, PA; Consistory, Valley of Reading, Reading, PA; Rajah Temple, Reading, PA; HI-12 Club, Temple University, Philadelphia; (all previous activities are Masonic Activities). He was a member of Ray A. Master, Post #217, American Legion, Topton, PA; V.F.W. Post #7071, Topton, PA; Reserve Officers Association of U.S., Washington, D.C; Pennsylvania Dutch Lodge #3, Philadelphia; Philadelphia County Dental Society; American Dental Association; American Association of Dental Schools; American Prosthodontic Society; The American Academy of Oral Medicine; The Academy of Stomatology; The Academy of General Dentistry; The American Society of Geriatric Dentistry; The Drexelbrook Club, Philadelphia; The Vesper Club, Philadelphia; The United States Order of Military Surgeons. He was President of Omicron Kappa Upsilon Dental Honor Society, Kappa Kappa Chapter, 1961. He was president of Grundsow Lodge, Temple University, 1961-1962; President of Masonic Club (HI-12), Temple University, 1962; President Delegate – Pennsylvania State Dental Association, 1962, 1967, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, and 1974; President – Temple University Dental Alumni Society, 1965 and Treasurer 1966 – 1973; President Omega Insurance Company, Philadelphia, 1965-1971; Treasurer Pennsylvania Academy of General Dentistry, 1966-1969; President of Pennsylvania Academy of General Dentistry 1969-1971; Program Chairman, Prosthetic Section, American Association of Dental Schools, 1969-1971; Chairman Aptitude Testing Committee, Temple University School of Dentistry, Philadelphia, 1963-1964, then served as committee member from 1965-1974; Chairman, Curriculum Committee, Temple University School of Dental Hygiene, 1969-1973; Chairman, Radiology Department Selection Committee, Temple University School of Dentistry, 1974.

Dr. Lantz was a 1931 graduate of Kutztown Area High School; 1939 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, Philadelphia, B.S. in Pharmacy; 1950 graduate of Temple University School of Dentistry, D.D.S; 1958 graduate of the University of Michigan and Temple University Graduate School, M.Ed; 1960 Fellow American College of Dentists, Los Angeles, CA; 1961 Fellow International College of Dentists, Philadelphia, PA; 1968 Fellow Academy of General Dentistry, Philadelphia, PA; 1967 Diplomate American Board of Oral Medicine; 1972 Academy of General Dentistry, San Francisco, CA. He was a member of United Presbyterian Church of Manoe, Havertown, PA.

Dr. Lantz received the Grand Cross of Color in 1958 (Masonic); in 1960 he was named Doctor of the Year by the Sigma Epsilon Delta Fraternity, Temple University, Philadelphia; Wynnewood Annual Civic Association Award in 1963. He was listed in “Who’s Who in the East, 1964 thru 1971. He received the Commander’s Award June 15, 1973 from the 350th Medical Detachment, US Army. September 30, 1973, he received the Meritorious Service Medal, awarded by the President of the United States. The Temple University School of Pharmacy awarded Dr. Lantz the Mortar and Pestle Award in 1972. He received the Wladimir de Souza Pereira Award, Department of Odontologia, Policlinic, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, July 15, 1974. He also was a member of the Temple University 25 year club, April 18, 1975. In 1976 he received the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Foundation Award for Distinguished Teaching.

He is survived by Wife; Daughter, Lynda (Lantz) Goulet, Cedar Falls, Iowa; Brothers, Warren Lantz, Topton, PA, Earl Lantz, Topton, PA, Willard Lantz, Leesport, PA; Sisters, Beatrice (Lantz) Adams, Topton, PA, Mildred (Lantz) Vanscoy, Bonita Springs, Florida, Elsie G. (Lantz) Desantis, Arlington, Texas; 1 Granddaughter.

Memorial services are Tuesday, March 16, 2004, 1:30 PM from Ludwick Funeral Home, 25 East Weis Street, Topton. Inurnment with Military Honors in Greenwood Cemetery, Allentown. Friends may call 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM. Masonic Services at 1:15 PM.
