Grant O. “Buddy” Schlegel, 88, of Kutztown, died Thursday, August 15, 2013 in The Lutheran Home at Topton, where he was a resident since 2011. He was the widower of Mae M. (Pauley) Schlegel who died July 3, 2013. They were married June 7, 1946, having just celebrated 67 years of marriage.
Born in Topton, he was a son of the late Irwin A. and Clara A. (Heiter) Schlegel. Grant was a member of Saint Peters United Church of Christ, Topton. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in South Pacific. Mr. Schlegel was employed as a foreman by the former Caloric Corporation, Topton, from 1946 until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of the Topton Jaycees, serving as a former president in the 1950s; a member of Emmaus Lodge No. 792, F.&A.M., Emmaus; Rajah Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Reading; Lehigh Shrine Club; Rajah Temple, Allentown; Lodge Council Chapter Consistory; and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Allentown.
He is survived by Daughter, Leora M. (Schlegel), wife of David J. Haas, Kutztown; Son, David L., husband of Cynthia K. (Gruber) Schlegel, Pottsville; Grandchildren, Laura E. (Haas), wife of Darek T. Teeters; Nicholas D., husband of Sundena Kate (Scholl) Haas and Matthew G., husband of Kelly A. (Hoch) Schlegel. There are also 8 Great Grandchildren, Kaylee Jane Haas, Adisyn Maye Teeters, Grant David Schlegel, Davin James Haas, Canaan Darek Teeters, Connor Nicholas Haas and twins Lexi Anne and Aubrey Jean Schlegel. He was predeceased by Sisters, Anna L. (Schlegel) Edinger and Florabell C. (Schlegel) Kramer; and Brothers, Robert Schlegel, Wayne I. Schlegel, Lee Schlegel, Rayneld E. Schlegel, Irwin E. Schlegel.
Funeral Services are Thursday, August 22, 2013, at 10:30 AM from Saint Peters United Church of Christ, 122 West Franklin Street, Topton. Interment, with military honors provided by Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion Honor Guard, Topton and the U.S. Navy, will follow in Zion Maxatawny Union Cemetery, Kutztown. Friends may call Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 8:30 PM in Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, and Thursday morning from 9:45 to 10:15 AM in the church. Masonic services provided by Emmaus Lodge No. 792, F.&A.M., Emmaus, will begin at 10:15 AM in the church.
The family requests contributions be made to the Memorial Fund of Saint Peters United Church of Christ, 122 West Franklin Street, Topton, PA 19562. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Kutztown, PA.
