Gordon C. Konemann, 80, of Kutztown, died Thursday, May 3, 2012 in his residence. He was the husband of Nancy A. (Kerr) Konemann. They were married February 16, 1952.
Born in Lyons, IL, he was a son of the late Clarence J. Sr. and Rose (Kubicki) Konemann. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Kutztown, where he is a former church council member. He is a 1949 graduate of Kutztown High School. He is a veteran of the Army Reserves. He was the Vice President and Treasurer of Atlas Minerals & Chemicals, retiring in 1993 after 37 years of service with the company.
Mr. Gordon was a former member of the Kutztown Jaycees, where he served as Vice President in 1959; director in 1963; President from 1964 to 1965; State Director in 1966. He received the Outstanding Jaycee Award in 1964 and Outstanding Jaycee President of Berks County in 1965; the Eyerman Award for Outstanding Jaycee President in the State in 1965; and during his reign of Jaycee President, Kutztown Chapter, received “Geisenbier Award for Outstanding Jaycee Club in the state. He was also a member of the Young Republican Club of Berks County; the President of the Kutztown Rotary Club in 1974 and was appointed as a school board member of the Kutztown Area School District in 1976. While Gordon was very active in sports during his high school years, he is best known for his involvement and extensive coaching career with Kutztown High School and Schuylkill Valley School District.
While at Kutztown, he served as assistant boys basketball coach, under coach John Silan, athletic director, and head coach of the Girls High School Basketball Team. They won five division titles, qualified for the Berks County tournament for 7 years and for the District III tournament for 10 years. Also, while Gordon was assistant varsity coach for Schuykill Valley High School Girls Basketball, they won six Division III playoffs for 8 years and State playoffs for three years. Mr. Wonderful, as he will always be remembered, was voted Outstanding Girls Basketball Coach, Division III, three times and Outstanding Girls Basketball Coach in Berks County in 1996.
He is survived by Wife, Daughters, Jan L. (Konemann) Trexler, companion of Marlowe G. Leibensperger, Jill R. (Konemann) wife of Stephen M. Fenstermacher, and Julie A. (Konemann) wife of James W. Weaknecht, III, all of Kutztown. There are 5 Grandchildren, Timothy A., husband of Josephine (Tang) Fenstermacher, Philadelphia; Amy L.(Fenstermacher) wife of SSgt. TJ Whitson, USMC, Ocala, FL, James W.,IV, David G. and Emma R. Weaknecht, all of Kutztown; 1 Great Grandson, Maxwell S. Whitson. He was pre-deceased by siblings, Mildred (Konemann) LeVan, Irene (Konemann) Moyer, Ralph Konemann and 2 brothers in infancy.
Memorial Services are Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 6:00 PM in Trinity Lutheran Church, 357 W. Main Street, Kutztown, 19530. Inurnment will be private at the convenience of the family. Friends may call Wednesday from 3:30 to 6 PM in the church.
The family requests contributions be made to Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 357 W. Main St., Kutztown, PA 19530. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Kutztown, PA.
