George W Jarrett

George W. Jarrett, 79, of Mertztown, died Wednesday, June 2, 2010, at 1:46 p.m., in the Lehigh Valley Hospital Inpatient Hospice Unit, Allentown. He was the husband of the late Gloria J. (Miller) Jarrett who died on March 26, 2007.

Born in Longswamp Township, Berks County, he was a son of the late Max A. and Mabel L. (DeLong) Jarrett. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Mertztown, He was a US Navy veteran of the Korean War serving from 1948 to 1951. He was a member and served as commander of the VFW Post 7071, Mertztown, in the 1970’s and 1980’s; a life member of the Ray A. Master, Post 217, American Legion, Topton; He served as President and Secretary of the Longswamp Lions Club from 1986 to 2009 and was the Zone Chairman of District l4P. He received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award from the Lions Club International Foundation in 1994 and the District Governor Award in 1987, 1990, 1992, 1996 and 1997. He was a life member of the Beacon Lodge for the Blind of Pennsylvania. He was a board member of the Kutztown Grundsow Lodge #15 from 1992 to 1997. He also served as president of the Longswamp Union Cemetery Board from 1986 to 1987 and was one of the founders of the Lehigh Valley Glass Association in the 1950’s. He owned and operated Jarrett’s Auto Glass, Mertztown from 1953 until his retirement in 1993.

He is survived by Daughter, Faye A. (Jarrett) wife of Forrest L. Strachan, Fleetwood; Son, Randall G. husband of Sandra A. (Keiser) Jarrett, Mertztown; Brother, Homer R. husband of Jean (Shelhamer) Jarrett, Slatington; and Grandchildren, Jonathon P. husband of Crystal (Bauscher) Strachan, Steven A. Strachan and Amanda L. Jarrett.

Memorial Services are Sunday, June 6, 2010, 4:00 PM in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 50 Luther Drive, Mertztown. Inurnment with Military Honors provided by Ray A. Master, Post 217, American Legion, Topton, in Longswamp Union Cemetery, Mertztown. Friends may call Sunday from 2:30 to 4:00 PM in the church.
