George Hellwig Jr., 97, of Longswamp Township, died Tuesday, November 20, 2012 in his residence. He was the widower of A. Marie (Swartzentruber) Hellwig, who died April 13, 1995.
Born in Coplay, Lehigh Co., he was a son of the late George and Sophie (Folbert) Hellwig. Mr. Hellwig was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, Mertztown. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II. Mr. Hellwig was employed by N.H. Flicker, Maxatawny, for 15 years, retiring in 1980. Prior to that, he was employed as a mechanic by the former Harry W. Knittle Implement Company, Kutztown for 27 years. Mr. Hellwig was a member of Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion, Topton and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 8282, and Breinigsville.
He is survived by Daughter, Virginia M. Hellwig, Mertztown; Sons, David G. wife of Delores A. (Miller) Hellwig, Mertztown and William P. husband of Coleen M. (Whitney) Hellwig, Kutztown. Other survivors include a Brother, John Hellwig, Loganton, Clinton County; 5 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren. He was predeceased by a Sister, Sophie (Hellwig) Harpel and a Grandson, Scott Adams.
Funeral Services are Saturday, November 24, 2012 at 11:30 AM from the Ludwick Funeral Home, 25 East Weis Street, Topton. Interment with military honors performed by Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion Honor Guard, Topton, in Longswamp Union Cemetery, Mertztown. Friends may call Saturday from 10:00 to 11:30 AM in the funeral home.
The family requests contributions be made to Saint Paul Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 117, Mertztown, PA 19539 or Berks Visiting Nurse Association Hospice, 1170 Berkshire Blvd., Wyomissing, PA 19610-1220. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Topton, PA.
