Gene G. Zimmerman

Gene G. Zimmerman, 91, of Sequim, WA, formerly of Kutztown, PA, died October 29, 2017 in Saint Joseph Medical Center, Tacoma, WA. He was the husband of Gloria M. (Jutte) Virak. They were married on September 25, 1996. His first wife, Nancy L. (Werley) Zimmerman, preceded him in death on April 7, 1983. Born in Kutztown, he was a son of the late Arthur M. and Mary B. (Gingrich) Zimmerman. Mr. Zimmerman was a member of Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, Sequim, WA.

Gene honorably and faithfully served his country, first, as a sergeant in the US Army with the 32 nd Division, 107 th Medical Battalion, Company B in the Pacific theatre of World War II (1944-46), then serving in the US Air Force, 1948-51. He owned and operated Zimmerman Electric in the Kutztown area until his retirement. On behalf of his older brother, Ted, the co-pilot of a B-24 that never returned from a mission in 1945, Gene was an active and passionate member of the 448 th Bomb Group Association.

In addition to his wife, Gloria,  Gene is survived by a daughter, Loni Z. (Zimmerman), wife of E. Frank Buck, Jr., Gettysburg, PA; and a son, Craig D., husband of Pamela L. (Gorsuch) Zimmerman, Kempton, PA. There are six grandchildren: Nils, husband of Katie (Manley), Spurkeland; Nancy (Spurkeland), wife of Jeff Rixe; Sonja Spurkeland, Adam Buck; Megan Zimmerman and Tyler Zimmerman. There is one great-granddaughter, Harper Rixe. In addition to his first wife, Nancy, Gene was predeceased by sisters, Kathleen (Zimmerman) Henderson; Faye (Zimmerman) Martin; and Olive (Zimmerman) Kaufman; and brothers, Royce, Arthur, Kenneth and Theodore Zimmerman.

A graveside service to honor Gene’s life will be held on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in Hope Cemetery, Kutztown. Inurnment with Military Honors is provided by Pennsylvania Military Honors, Fort Indiantown Gap, in Hope Cemetery, Kutztown.
