Dr. Gary S. Roth, 56, of 419 West Race St., Fleetwood, died Thursday, October 2, 2003, in Hahnemann University Hospital, Philadelphia. He was married to Patricia A. (Hilbert) Roth for 34 years last March.
Born in Allentown, he was a son of George Roth of Kutztown and the late Betty M. S. (Krueger) Roth, and a stepson of Margaret C. (Moore) Roth, Bowers, Berks County. He was a podiatrist opening an office in Mertztown in 1979 and then in Topton and in 1988 forming a partnership with Dr. Michael L. Stevens and later expanding his practice to East Penn Podiatry Associates, Kutztown. He and his brother, Phil K. Roth, founded G.R. Laboratories, Topton, an orthotics manufacturing company, in 1978, and during the 1980s they co-founded Specialty Millworks, Topton. He also co-founded Mertztown Community Medical Center, with Drs. C. Shah and Dennis Moss in 1979. He was co-director of the Podiatric Surgical Residency Program of Oxford Hospital, Philadelphia, 1985-87. He received an associate degree in education from York College, York, a bachelor of science degree in pre-med zoology from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a doctor of podiatric medicine degree from Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine, Philadelphia, in 1979. He served a surgical externship at Rolling Hills Hospital and Jeans Hospital, both of Philadelphia. He was certified as a diplomate by the National Board of Podiatric Examiners, Philadelphia in 1979 and in 1994 was certified a board diplomate by American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics in 1994. He received the Dr. Lee M. Lindenberry Memorial Award in Excellence in Orthotics in 1979.
He was a member of Zion Moselem Lutheran Church, Kutztown. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a medical naval corpsman at the Naval Hospital, Bethesda, Md., Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Camp Sansome, Okinawa, Japan. A member of the Pennsylvania Podiatric Medical Association, Camp Hill; and the Lehigh Valley Podiatric Society, Allentown, he was a past member of the Berks County Podiatric Society, Reading. He was a soccer coach for the Fleetwood Youth League over 20 years, past president of Fleetwood Youth Baseball Association, Fleetwood and coached the Germainia Soccer Club, of the Reading Leiderkranz.
He is survived by Wife; Father; Stepmother; Son, Scott Eric of Bethlehem; Daughter, Tara L. Stitzel of Kutztown; Brother, Phil K. of Topton; Half Brothers, Robert A. of Bowers, James J. of Kutztown; sisters, Dianne P. Smith of Fleetwood, Barbara Ann Blair of Gulph Mills, Montgomery County; stepsister, Susan E. Richmond of Lawrenceville, N.J., Linda Algar in Virginia; 2 Grandchildren.
Memorial Services are Sunday, October 5, 2003 at 4:00 PM in Grace Lutheran Church, on the campus of The Lutheran Home at Topton, One South Home Avenue, Topton. Private Inurnment in New Jerusalem Union Cemetery (Rockland Twp.) Fleetwood, PA. Friends may call Sunday 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM in the church .
The family requests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society of the Lehigh Valley, 2121 City Line Road, Bethlehem, PA 18017. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Kutztown, PA.
