Floyd J. Smith, 86, of Topton, and formerly of Ruscombmanor Township, Berks County, died Wednesday, January 26, 2011 in the Lutheran Home at Topton. He was the husband of Mary A. (Schenck) Smith. They were married on December 28, 1946.
Born in York, PA he was a son of the late Gordon H., Sr. and Anna (Augsburg) Smith. He was a member of Frieden’s Lutheran Church, Oley. He graduated from William Penn Senior High School, York, in 1941; and, the US Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He served as a Lieutenant in the US Navy during WWII and the Korean War. Mr. Smith began his career with Met Ed in 1948 as a construction supervisor working his way up through the ranks to become Vice President of GPU Service Corporation, Parsippany, NJ and the President and Chief Operating Officer of Met Ed, Reading, from 1983 until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of several organizations including the Blandon Lions Club; Rotary International, Reading; Hawk Mountain Boy Scout Council; Pennsylvania Electric Association; Past President of the Manufactures Association of Berks County; Board of Director of the former Community General Hospital, Reading; Board of Director for the Utilities Employees Credit Union, Reading; a fireman with the Ruscombmanor Volunteer Fire Company; Zeredatha Lodge 451, F & AM, York; Rajah Shrine, Reading; Reading County Club, Berkshire Country Club and Moselem Springs Country Club. He was an avid golfer and an avid glider pilot, flying out of the former Kutztown Airport.
He is survived by Wife, Sons, Gary L. husband of Cynthia (Kissinger) Smith, Upper Montclair, NJ, Edward A. Smith, Mohrsville, Centre Township; Daughter, Carla J. (Smith) wife of Craig A. Soskin, Pennsburg, Bucks County; Sister, Sandra (Smith) wife of Ronald Burkholder, Myrtle Beach, SC; Brother, Gordon H. Smith, Jr., York; and Grandchildren, Amy M. (Smith) wife of Andrew Wenzl, Kevin M. husband of Jennifer (Castelli) Smith, Nicole M. Soskin and Evan C. Soskin.
A Celebration of Life Service to be held later this year will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Kutztown, PA.
