Eugene "Gene" "Teeney" Swavely, 87, of Kempton, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 29, 2024 in his daughter's Sinking Spring residence. He was the husband of Joan D. (Schlegel) Swavely, whom he married on February 10, 1956.
Born in Fleetwood, Eugene was a son of the late William Swavely and Miriam (Homan) Arndt and attended school in both Walnuttown and Fleetwood. Eugene was proud of his country and honorably and faithfully served in both The United States Army and The Pennsylvania Army National Guard. Eugene was a very hardworking person who devoted his life to providing for his family. He was employed by W. E. Yoder, Inc., Kutztown, for nearly 60 years until his retirement, working as a Railroad Construction Foreman and following his retirement, as a consultant. He also worked at the former Red Cheek Co., Fleetwood, and for a local painter.
Eugene was an avid outdoorsman, expert archer and knowledgeable hunter. He was a member of the Kempton Rod and Gun Club where he served as a youth archery instructor for many years. He was also a member of the Ontelaunee Rod & Gun Club, and enjoyed fishing and camping. He was a man of faith and attended Calvary Church, Allentown. Eugene had a great sense of humor and was referred to as the Prankster by his family and friends.
In addition to his wife of 68 years, Joan, Eugene is survived by his six children, Terry G. Swavely, Kutztown, Timothy E., husband of Bonnie Swavely, Topton, E. Gary, husband of Sultana Swavely, Macungie, Tammy L. Swavely, Kutztown, Kelly L. (Swavely), wife of David Hodgkins, Sinking Spring, and Christine A. (Swavely), wife of Shaun Croissette, Boyertown; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six sisters; two brothers; and predeceased by a sister.
A viewing for Eugene will be held on Friday, October 4, 2024 from 11:00 to 12:00 p.m. in Ludwick Funeral Homes and Cremation Care, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, PA. A graveside service to celebrate Eugene's life and burial will be held at 12:30 p.m. in Berks County Memorial Gardens, 201 Evansville Road (US Rt.222), Fleetwood, PA. Military honors will be rendered by Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion Honor Guard, Topton, PA, to honor Eugene's dedicated service to his county.
