Ernest R Mertz

Ernest R. Mertz, 84, of Richmond Township , died Monday, April 28, 2014 in Kutztown Manor, Inc., Kutztown, where he was a resident for almost two years.  He was the husband of Arline P. (Dietrich) Mertz, whom he married September 24, 1949 .

Born in Maxatawny Township , he was a son of the late Raymond and Mabel (Wartzenluft) Mertz.  He was a member of Saint John's Lutheran Church, Kutztown. Mr. Mertz was employed as a carpenter by the Lehigh Valley District Council, Bethlehem, for many years, until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of the Kutztown Rod and Gun Club, where he helped with trap shooting. He was also a member of the Kutztown Fire Company, Perry Township Game Association, Lenhartsville Fish and Game, Pikeville Sportsman’s Association, and the National Rifle Association. Ernest enjoyed hunting and fishing .

He is survived by Wife, Son, Eric R., husband of Amy L. (DeLong) Mertz, Kutztown; Sisters, Bernice (Mertz) Sayer, Laila (Mertz) Sousley, and Joanne (Mertz) Albright; Brother, Kenneth Mertz. There are also 2 Grandchildren, Kourtney Shafer and Miranda Shafer; and a Great Grandson, Hunter Kline .

Memorial Services are Friday, May 2, 2014 at 10:30 AM from Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, 19530. Inurnment will follow in Zion Moselem Church Cemetery, Kutztown. Relatives and friends may call Friday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 AM in the funeral home.
