The Reverend Doctor Ellery B. Haskell, age 90, of Price Drive, Topton PA, died Sunday, September 1, 2002 in the Reading Hospital and Medical Center, West Reading PA. He was the husband of Grace C. (Campbell) Haskell. The couple celebrated their 61st Wedding Anniversary this past April.
Born in Waltham MA, he was the son of the late Harold C. Haskell and Carrie E. (Dakin) Haskell. He was a Member of First Baptist Church, Reading PA, where he served as Moderator, Deacon, Superintendent of the Church School, Men's Class Teacher, Chairman of the Board of Christian Social Concern and an occasional Preacher., He was an Associate Member of Grace Lutheran Church, Topton.
He was Pastor of Spencer Federated Church, NY, from 1937 to 1941 and Emmanuel Baptist Church, Chester PA from 1942 to 1945. He taught American History of Religions, Introduction to Philosophy, History of Philosophy, Philosophy of History, Political Philosophy and Eastern Philosophy at Albright College from 1946 until his retirement in 1977. Following his retirement he taught a program part-time on Meditation, Mysticism, Prayer and the Nature of Consciousness and World Communication.
He was a 1933 summa cum laude graduate of Colgate University, Hamilton NY with a Bachelor's degree in Philosophy and attended Yale Divinity School for two years. He received his Bachelor's degree in Divinity from Colgate Rochester Divinity School, Rochester NY in 1936. He was ordained into the American Baptist Ministry at Parsells Avenue Baptist Church, Rochester in 1937. He received a Master's of Arts degree in American History from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia PA and earned his Doctorate in History from the University of Chicago, Chicago IL in 1964.
He was past Vice President and a Director of the Greater Reading Council of Churches; past President of the Reading Chapter of the World Federalists; past President and Director Emeritus of the World Affairs Council of Reading-Berks; and past President of the Pennsylvania Division of the American Association of University Professors. He was a Member for more than 50 years of the USA World Federalists.
He is survived by his Wife; Daughter, Helen J. (Haskell) Bosart of Guilderland NY; Son, Richard C. Haskell of Claremont CA; 4 Grandchildren and 2 Great Grandsons.
Memorial Services will be held 3:30 PM Sunday, September 22, 2002 in the Chapel of Grace Lutheran Church, 1 South Home Avenue, Topton PA. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Topton PA.
