Earl Herbert Schappell, 92, of Topton, died Tuesday, June 16, 2015 in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township. He was the widower of Glendowyr L. (Smith) Schappell and they were married for 70 years prior to her death on January 9, 2012.

Born in Kutztown, he was a son of the late Herbert G. C., and Nieda S. (Ruppert) Schappell. Mr. Schappell was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Topton, where he served as a former church council member. He was a 1940 graduate of Kutztown Area High School and a United States Army veteran serving as a Staff Sergeant in Belgium and France during World War II. Mr. Schappell was employed as the National Distribution Manager by Just Born, Inc., Bethlehem for many years, retiring in 1990. Prior to that, he was employed as a Manager by Knoll International, East Greenville for 24 years. He was a charter member of Delta Nu Alpha Transportation and Traffic Club of the Lehigh Valley and a lifetime member of Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion, Topton. A family centered, loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Mr. Schappell was an avid walker and was often seen walking around Topton.

He is survived by Daughters, Cynthia D. (Schappell), wife of Charles Bennett, Jacksonville, FL, and Karen E. (Schappell), widow of Gary R. Breshers, Topton; Son, Tyrone A. Schappell, a resident at Kutztown Manor; Grandson, Lance E. Plessl, Topton; and his four-legged companion, Abby. He was predeceased by his Wife, Glendowyr and a Sister, Grace (Schappell) Adams.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015 at 10:00 AM in Ludwick Funeral Homes, Inc., 25 East Weis Street, Topton, with Reverend Arthur L. Hahn officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by Ray A. Master Post 217, American Legion Honor Guard, Topton and The Pennsylvania Military Funeral Honor Guard, Fort Indiantown Gap, Annville, will follow in Topton Union Cemetery, Topton. Relatives and friends may call Saturday morning from 9:00 to 10:00 AM in the funeral home.

The family requests contributions be made in Earl's memory to Trinity Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 37, Topton, PA 19562-0037. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Topton, PA.
