Darwin W Miller

August 29, 1915 — January 20, 2005

Dr. Darwin W. Miller, 89, formerly of 243 East Weis St., Topton, died Thursday, January 20, 2005, in The Lutheran Home at Topton, where he resided since December 1, 2000. He was the widower of Jane (Keegan) Miller who died July 5, 2000. His first wife, Laura L. (Maxwell) Miller died September 15, 1988.

Born August 29, 1915 in Meadville, Crawford County, PA, he was the son of the late Wallace H. and Hazel O. (Consider) Miller. He was a professor of Elementary Education at Kutztown State Teacher’s College, now Kutztown University from 1959 until his retirement in 1976, he also served as coach of the Kutztown University golf team until 1976. After his retirement, until 1988, he was a private golf instructor at Sittler’s Driving Range, Kutztown. From 1946 to 1958 he was director of education at Hempfield Area School District, Greensberg, Westmoreland County. Prior to that he was employed as an elementary school teacher in the North Girard Elementary School; he also coached boys and girls basketball during the 1930’s and 40’s. He was a US Army veteran of WWII, serving in the European Theater as a Master Sergeant. Dr. Miller was a 1933 graduate of Meadville High School, received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Edenboro University in 1938; his Master Degree in education from Columbia University, NY, in 1946; and his PhD in Administration from Penn State University, State College in 1957. Dr. Miller was a member of St. Peter’s United Church of Christ, Topton, where he served and an Elder, adult Sunday school teacher, and a choir member for many years. He served as a board member of Saucony Cross and Friend, Inc., Kutztown. He was a member of Topton and Blandon Lions Clubs.

He is survived by Sons, Darwin W. Miller, II, husband of Lois (Stevenson) Miller of Greensboro, NC, and David Maxwell Miller, husband of Sharon (Solt) Miller, Alburtis; Daughters, Cassandra L. (Miller) widow of Neil Hamsher, Coopersburg, and Sally O. (Miller) wife of Clyde Hilbert, Mertztown. He is also survived by two brothers, Richard A., Sebring, FL, and Donald R. of Lakewood FL; 7 Grandchildren, 3 Great Grandchildren.

Funeral Services are Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at 10:30 AM from St. Peter’s UCC Church, 122 W. Franklin St., Topton. Interment with Military Honors in Topton Union Cemetery, Topton. Friends may call 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM in the church.

Flowers may be sent or contributions may be made to the memorial fund of Saint Peter’s United Church of Christ, 122 West Franklin Street, Topton. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Topton, PA.
