Christine M. (Hilbert) Mattern, 70, of Kutztown, formerly of Mertztown, died Friday, December 9, 2022, in the home of her daughter, Marie, with whom she resided. She was the widow of Clifford P. Scholl, Jr., who died in 1970, during combat. Born in Allentown, Christine was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Helen J. (Haberstumpf) Hilbert.
Chris was employed in the food service department of The Lutheran Home at Topton, for over 30 years until her retirement.
Christine was an animal lover and enjoyed traveling with her long-time companion Thomas Ritter. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her granddaughters and great granddaughter.
Christine is lovingly survived by daughters: Jennifer J., wife of Frank W. Pilgert, Mertztown; and Marie L., wife of Michael S. Kistler, Kutztown. Other survivors include granddaughters: Kiersten M. (Kistler), wife of Nathan P. Miller; Madison L. Kistler; Briana M. Pilgert and Emily T. Pilgert; and a great granddaughter: Ella Marie Miller. There is one brother, Jules, husband of Rita Hilbert, Trexlertown. In addition to her first husband and parents, Christine was predeceased by a brother, Frederick Hilbert.
A private graveside service to honor and celebrate Christine's life will be held at the convenience of the family in Longswamp Union Cemetery, Mertztown. There are no public viewing or calling hours.
The family requests contributions be made in Christine's memory to The Sanctuary at Haafsville, 901 Nestle Way, Breinigsville, PA 18031.
