Charles B. Sokol, Jr., 89, of Fleetwood and Summerfield, Fla, and formerly of Kutztown, died Sunday, July 25, 2010 in The Reading Hospital and Medical Center, West Reading. He was the husband of Jacquelyn F. (Dissinger) Sokol. They were married November 30, 1947.
Born in Egypt, PA, he is the son of the late Charles B., Sr. and Catherine (Pelich) Sokol. He is a member of St. Marys Roman Catholic Church, Kutztown. He is an Army Veteran of World War II. He and his wife owned and operated the Central Hotel, Kutztown for 13 years, and the former Chas. B. Sokol Beer Distributor, Kutztown for 25 years. In 1945 he was active in the Kutztown Athletic Association for Veterans Basketball and Baseball. From 1950 to 1995 he was the Coach or manager for the Kutztown American Legion Baseball team. From 1959 to 1966 he directed construction and served as the director of the Kutztown Little League. From 1984 to 1987 he was President of Berks County American Legion Baseball League. He received the 1959 Outstanding Citizen Award from the Kutztown Jaycees. In 1980 he was inducted into the Pennsylvania American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame. He was a member of the former Kutztown Chamber of Commerce, served on Kutztown Borough Council for 4 years, was a Charter Member of the Kutztown Optimist Club and past Commander of the Hoch-Balthaser American Legion Post 480. He was also a past President of Berks County Beer Distributors Association.
He is survived by Daughers, Cynthia J., (Sokol) wife of Kenneth C. Schlegel, Fleetwood, Donna R. (Sokol), wife of Robert A. Ream, Kutztown and Cathy (Sokol) wife of John F. Luchetta, The Villages, Fla.; Sons, Barry C. husband of Barbara S. (Schlenker) Sokol, Kutztown and David R. husband of Weatherly J. (Leibensperger) Sokol, Kutztown. There is also a Sister, Anna (Sokol), Torbey, Allentown. Also surviving are 9 Grandchildren, 4 Step Grandchildren, 6 Great Grandchildren and 5 Step Great Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a Sister, Mary (Sokol) Puchyr-Hankee.
Funeral Services are Thursday, July 29, 2010, at 2:00 PM from Ludwick Funeral Home, 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown. Interment in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Township. Friends may call Thursday, from 1:00 to 2:00 PM in the funeral home.
