Charles A. McCreary, 62, of Hickory Hollow Lane, (District Twp.) Alburtis, PA, died Friday, August 6, 2004, in Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Twp., near Allentown, where he was a patient since August 4, 2004. He was the husband of Helen M. (Geisinger) McCreary. They were married August 20, 1965.
Born in District Twp., BerksCounty, PA, he was the son of the late Albert S. and the late Ruth E. (Fryer) McCreary. He was employed by the Pennsylvania State Police until his retirement, January 1, 2002. He began his career in 1965 when he received his academy training. In 1966 he graduated and became a trooper in the patrol division of the Butler Barracks. In 1969 he joined Troop L, Reading, as a Trooper in the Patrol Division. In 1972 he was promoted to the rank of Corporal and remained with Troop L, as a patrol supervisor. In 1980 McCreary was assigned to the Criminal Investigation Division and served there until 1982 when he returned to the patrol division. In 1986 Cpl. McCreary was instrumental in starting the Narcotics K-9 Division of the PA State Police. He remained in that division, stationed from the Academy Barracks, Hershey until 1999, when he returned to Troop L. In 1993 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. In 2000 McCreary again was transferred to the Criminal Investigation Division of Reading – based Troop L. and remained there until his retirement. Sgt. McCreary was a member of the Incident Information Management System (IIMS) team, which designed the Mobile Computer Dispatch System for the State Police. That system is being implemented now throughout the state of PA. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from Penn State University. He was a peacetime US Army veteran. He was a past president of the Phillip E. Melley Memorial Lodge, Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge #65, and served on the Individual Retirement Association Committee for many years. He was currently the Chairman of the Zoning Hearing Board of District Township and had been for over twenty years. He was a past commander of American Legion post #386, Hershey, PA. He was a member, since age 15 and a past president of the Reading Emergency Amateur Radio Club, Reading. In addition, he was a 32 nd Degree Mason with the Vaux Lodge # 406, F. & A.M., Hamburg. He was a member of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Kutztown.
He is survived by Wife, Son, Franklin C. McCreary, Emmaus, Lehigh County; Daughter, Susan E. (McCreary) Kozza, Allentown; Brother, James R. McCreary, Reading; Sisters, Sally A. (McCreary) Brueggemann, Cumru Twp., Nancy R. McCreary, Hamburg, Judy E. (McCreary) Reed, Reading; 1 Granddaughter.
Funeral Services are Friday, August 13, 2004, at 10:00 AM from Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 190 Kohler Road, (Maxatawny Twp.) Kutztown. Interment in Huff’s Church Union Cemetery, (Hereford Twp.) Alburtis, PA. Friends may call Thursday, 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM at the Ludwick Funeral Home, 333 Greenwich Street, Kutztown, and Friday, 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM in the Church. Fraternal Order of Police Lodge Services Thursday, 7:30 PM. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Kutztown, PA.
