Carmen E. Hagelgans, 92, of Myrtle Beach, SC, and formerly of Bethlehem, PA, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 10, 2023 in Myrtle Beach. He was the loving husband of Arlene (Hartman) Hagelgans to whom he shared 70 years of marriage. Carmen was born on March 17, 1931 in Hazelton, PA, and was a son of the late William Everett and Anna (Votta) Hagelgans.
Carmen was a graduate of Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA and later, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA, where he received his master's degree. He was employed by the Parkland School District where he was a teacher and the track and cross-country coach for many years.
He was an avid runner and cyclist. He was instrumental in starting the LVAA running club. Carmen competed in the second World Masters Championship held in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1977. He ran in many marathons over the years including the Boston Marathon, which he competed in several times. He was an avid golfer in his retirement and had a hole in one at Island Green Country Club in 2001.
Along with his beloved wife, Arlene, Carmen is survived by his children, Deborah (Hagelgans) Hunter, and her husband Richard, Joyce (Hagelgans) Shea, Mary Ann (Hagelgans) Cacciola, and her husband Dennis, and William Hagelgans, and his wife Christine; two sisters, Lucille (Hagelgans) Serock and Nancy (Hagelgans), wife of Joseph Meyers; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Margaret Mary Hagelgans.
A graveside burial service to celebrate and honor Carmen's life will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in Holy Saviour Cemetery, 2575 Linden Street, Bethlehem, with Deacon Reuben Hartzell officiating. There are no calling hours.
