Burd W Schantz

Burd W. Schantz, 80, of Longswamp Township , died Saturday April 5, 2014 in The Lutheran Home at Topton. He was the husband of Joyce A. (Hobert) Schantz, they were married December 18, 1954 .

Born in Emmaus, he was a son of the late Howard and Neda (Schuler) Schantz. Mr. Schantz was a member of the Lutheran congregation of Huff's Union Church, Alburtis, where he was a past member of church council. Burd was also a member of Pennsylvania Farmers Association, Pennsylvania Holstein Association, Berks County Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) and served several years as its president. He was also a member of Lehigh Valley Dairy Cooperative and Berks County Cooperative Extension. In 1954 Burd was awarded the designation of Star Farmer of America, a national award given by the Future Farmers of America . He was chosen for the award from among 370,000 farmers nationwide. He received the award from the Future Farmers of America at its Kansas City convention.

He is survived by Son, David W. husband of Katherine A. (Danner) Schantz, Alburtis. Other survivors include a Sister, Ruby M. Schantz, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; 3 Grandchildren, Matthew D. husband of Rochelle R. (Goins) Schantz, Nathan D. Schantz and Megan E. (Schantz) wife of Jeffrey Ruth. There are also 2 Great Grandchildren, Asher Jeffrey Ruth and Heather Megan Ruth .

Funeral Services are Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 11:30 AM from Huff's Union Church, 540 Conrad Road, Alburtis . Interment in Huffs Church Union Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday, from 10:30 to 11:30 AM in the church .

The family requests contributions be made to Huff's Union Church Capital Improvement Fund, 540 Conrad Road, Alburtis, PA 18011 . Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Topton, PA.
