Arlene Emma (Guth) Fegley, RN, 96, of Topton, formerly of Lehighton, PA and Brookfield, CT, died Saturday, September 22, 2012 in the Lutheran Home at Topton. She was the devoted, loving, wife of the late Homer B. Fegley, MD, who was almost 100 1/2 when he died on December 14, 2011. They were married January 26, 1938 in a small ceremony in Allentown, PA, by her uncle, the Rev. Arthur Peter Grammes.
Born on October 8, 1915, in South Whitehall Township, she was a daughter of the late Edward M. and Emma R. (Grammes) Guth. Mrs. Fegley was a 1933 graduate of the former South Whitehall High School, now Parkland High School. She was a 1937 graduate of Allentown Hospital School of Nursing. She met her future husband while a student nurse when he was an intern at the hospital. It took strong persuasion from her former roommate to go to the movies with him because of her goal to become a nurse, which was financed by her uncle Arthur. She met his parents on their third date. She was the night nurse in charge of the operating room in the Allentown Hospital after graduation.
Mrs. Fegley worked as an office nurse for her husband, Homers, private practice from 1938 to 1942; served as Red Cross Community Nurse in Catasauqua, PA, during WWII, while her husband served his country in Europe; and was an office nurse for her husband in Catasauqua and Lehighton, PA, from 1946 until her retirement in 1968, when they moved to Connecticut so that her husband could become a founding doctor in the Emergency Room at the Danbury Hospital. Mrs. Fegley was a Den Mother for Cub Scout Pack #83, Lehighton. She was a life member of Allentown Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association. She was an accomplished homemaker and cook; was an avid gardener who raised beautiful roses, and did everything she could to help others unselfishly, especially her family. The family would like to thank the Lutheran Home at Topton, the staff of D1 and D2 of the Henry Health Care Center, and Hospice St. John for caring for Arlene and Homer.
