Albert G. Stewart, 86, of Mertztown, passed away on Monday, June 22, 2009 in his home surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Marion Helen (Kunkle) Stewart and they celebrated their 63 rd anniversary this past February 16 th .

Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA on September 29, 1922 to the late George Albert and Katherine (Fraley) Stewart, he was the youngest of five children. Albert was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Mertztown, where he served on the property committee. Albert served in the Pennsylvania National Guard and, also served almost 3 years in the US Army during WWII. He was awarded the distinguished Silver Star for “Gallantry in Action” during the Battle of the Bulge and was one of thirty-four soldiers in his unit who survived the battle. Additionally, Albert received the European Middle East Medal with two bronze stars, the WWII Victory Ribbons, the American Campaign Medal, the Gold Conduct Medal and the Combat Infantry Badge. Further, he was a lifetime member of the Ray A. Master, Post #217, American Legion, Topton. Albert worked for the Central Railroad of New Jersey, the Lehigh Valley Railroad and Conrail, retiring on September 29, 1982. After he retired he enjoyed making clocks and furniture for family and friends. He loved to travel and visited every state except Alaska. He also visited England and Europe.

He is survived by Wife, Marion; Son, James A. husband of Ruth F. (Peischler) Stewart, Macungie; Daughters, Diane H. (Stewart) wife of Thomas M. Bloxham, Oak Ridge, NC, Connie E. (Deppe) Stewart, Allentown; Granddaughter, Karen L. wife of Brian Ritter; Grandson, Keith A. husband of Renee Stewart; Great Grandchildren, Benjamin and Aiden Ritter and Austin and Ella Stewart.

Celebrations of Life Services are Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 10:30 AM in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 50 Luther Drive, Mertztown. Interment in Longswamp Union Cemetery, Mertztown, with Military Honors provided by the Ray A. Master, Post #217, American Legion Honor Guard of Topton. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 AM in the church.

The family requests contributions to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, PO Box 50, Mertztown, PA 19539. Arrangements are by the Ludwick Funeral Home, Topton, PA.
